Summary Description California Berry Cultivars is looking for a Plant Pathology Project Lead to expand our disease screening activities for the strawberry breeding program.
The Plant Pathology Project Lead will be responsible for the overall execution and management of our pathology program.
This will include, but not be limited to, laboratory management, inoculant preparation, disease diagnostics, greenhouse project management, and data collection.
The successful candidate will have a background in wet lab work, be familiar with microbiology and laboratory protocols required to grow fungal inoculums and have a general familiarity with plant disease ratings.
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities o Cross-functional applied research and operations management in the areas of plant disease diagnosis, pathogen detection and identification and integrated disease management.
o Collaborating with Plant Breeder Assistants and the Director of R&D, to design and manage growing systems per business needs and in compliance with regulations and phytosanitary restrictions.
o Oversee and participate in the building of the disease screening greenhouse, laboratory, and other facilities needed to fulfill the role of Plant Pathology Development Lead.
o Plan research, budget, and manage resources to make the Plant Pathology development project and the laboratory effective.
o Traveling to other CBC breeding sites for data collection will be required.
Qualifications o Master's degree in plant pathology or microbiology with a strong background in laboratory skills, or bachelor's in similar field with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
o Experience in applied plant pathology (inoculum preparation and other wet lab techniques) and molecular biology techniques (DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, ELISA, and relevant techniques) in agriculture research.
o Experience setting up and/or running a plant pathology diagnostic lab in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
o Experience, passion, and excitement in the greenhouse or indoor growing space.
o Knowledge and confidence to use hand tools and power tools as needed.
o Basic knowledge of hydroponic farm systems/greenhouse irrigation systems.
o Creative thinking around problem solving, flexibility, and comfort dealing with evolving problems.
o Data-driven and able to seek out resources needed to be successful.
o Exceptional communication skills.
o Self-driven, and capable of driving projects with minimal oversight.
o A passion for improved strawberries, intellectual curiosity, and bias for action.
Working Conditions:
Car travel around the state of California will be required on a semi-regular basis.
Some domestic and international plane travel will be required.
Overnight travel will be required.
Work under various outdoor climate conditions, including those conditions typically encountered in field work.
This position will periodically require long hours, including some weekends.
Comply with all County, State and Federal regulations.
All applicants must be 18 years or older to apply.
Must have a valid California Driver's License.
Must be able to lift 50lbs repeatedly.
Knowledge and practice of laboratory and phytosanitary safety techniques.
Credentials for mixing and applying pesticides.
Clean and hygienic.
Willing to work year-round in Central Valley weather to collect all necessary data.

Salary range:
$65,000 to $85,000 annually depending on experience Applications:
This position will be primarily located in French Camp, CA with travel to our other locations within CA.
